<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is truly the best language arts program I have ever used and I have used many. My children love it because of the simple and short lessons. I love it because it is so beautiful and each concept is introduced in a way that they can understand and retain the information. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week I was out of town for work. It was my turn to learn some new things. I got to tour an amazing church and learn new ways to reach our younger generations for Jesus. It was FANTASTIC! I missed my kiddos though. They were at home plugging away at their school work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Skittles learned what a limerick is and wrote a few himself. </li>
<li>Twizzler finished his first Hooked on Phonics section and started to read the chapter book. </li>
<li>Hershey spent most of the week just trying to breathe. His asthma was flared up pretty bad. </li>
</ul>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisGvd31y3ZJov0RU9yrdFOg8SIFZvmyrRSeTAXOEU5ckS79aznrhORPwFwSE0TMFFJw0CIn9sH80XorwTa3IrHPZHwX69F4ULZiqM1Ybjrs_1n_ibtRjCHp1BMT0YPm24k797HxibIpoF8/s1600/11216726_10153007319501513_7342396343912676697_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisGvd31y3ZJov0RU9yrdFOg8SIFZvmyrRSeTAXOEU5ckS79aznrhORPwFwSE0TMFFJw0CIn9sH80XorwTa3IrHPZHwX69F4ULZiqM1Ybjrs_1n_ibtRjCHp1BMT0YPm24k797HxibIpoF8/s320/11216726_10153007319501513_7342396343912676697_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week has gone so much better. School work is taking about 4 hours to complete each day for Skittles and Twizzler. Hershey's lesson is about 30 minutes tops. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>This week we were thrilled to find an experiment in our geography curriculum. We learned about tectonic plates and the layers of the earth and of course, volcanoes. So we got to make a volcano. I found this <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/173951604334623831/">awesome Pin</a> on how to make a volcano. We enjoyed it so much that we made it erupt like 10 times. </li>
<li>Skittles is finally getting the hang of his science class and has worked a little bit ahead. </li>
<li>Twizzler is doing Hooked on Phonics this year for reading. Even though he is able to read, he still struggles with sounding out new words especially if they are longer. So far he loves it and I am amazed each day with the fluency he is able to read his assignment after each lesson. </li>
<li>Hershey likes to listen to our read aloud lessons and he even insists on notebooking along with us. He has his own notebook and he "writes" on the lines. </li>
</ul>
We had our first week back at co-op. We are only going a half day, every other week which is so good for us this year. The kids are taking some great classes. Skittles and Twizzler are taking Music and Spanish. Skittles is also taking a finance class. Twizzler is taking a manners class. Hershey is taking American Sign Language, a bug class, and Show and tell. I am teaching a bug class (shudder) and show and tell.... I am sticking to the less-nasty bugs. This week we learned about butterflies.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We began school just one week after moving into our new home. We did not even have a table to set our books on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I posted pictures of our first day of school throughout the day for family and friends. From Facebook, it looked like we were having a lovely day. What a JOKE!<br />
<br />
Each one of us took turns crying at some point. I bawled my eyes out and cried out to God, "WHY?!? Why are you making me do this?!? We are all miserable!"<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Skittles struggled with his new science program. It is an online course and learning how to navigate it was a nightmare the first week.</li>
<li>Twizzler had not yet finished his math from last year. He had 4 lessons to complete before he could move on to this year's math. Those 4 days were awful. It took him a couple of hours each day to get through. </li>
<li>Hershey started his first week of preschool. We learned about Cows, squares, the number 1, and the letter A. One of his lessons was to glue squares onto a big letter A. After I got him all set up he told me, "You are ruining my life" When his brother's heard this they felt very ashamed. They had been yelling this at me all week. Hearing our little parrot echo their sentiment over a simple art project gave them a reality check.</li>
</ul>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Most days, not every day, we try to start off with just going over the weather, calendar, and etc. I printed off the pages and put them in a presentation book. The pages slip into the plastic covers of the book and can be written on and wiped away each day. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Hershey uses the <a href="http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2015/05/preschool-daily-learning-notebook-2015-2016.html">Preschool notebook</a>. There are also pages with letters, numbers, and shapes. We use them with his <a href="http://www.letteroftheweek.com/Preparatory.html">preschool curriculum.</a> </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We switched to Story of the World this year for a few reasons. We do not use the activity book. We read the story together. After the story, the boys give me an oral narration and I write down key words on the white board. Then they use those key words to create a written narration in their notebooks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found these <a href="http://tendingourlordsgarden.blogspot.com/p/story-of-world-volume-2-resources.html">awesome timeline cards</a> that go with Volume 2. I also found a <a href="http://satorismiles.com/2011/08/20/story-of-the-world-ancients-timeline-cards-2/">tutorial </a>on how to make them smaller. We are entering them into a timeline I created myself.</div>

This cursive writing program is awesome. I was skeptical when I ordered it last year but I thought at the very least we could use it as a picture study. Twizzler learned how to read and write in cursive using these books. They are beautiful, simple, and effective. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Math is a touchy subject among homeschoolers. It is a struggle to find what works for your family. We have been using this for 3 years now and it is fantastic. The best part is that they don't not just give the answers but they walk you through how to get the answers for EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I LOVE English. It was always my favorite subject in school but I struggled to find a program that I loved to teach and they loved to learn.... until last year. Queen's Language Lessons are just the best Charlotte Mason inspired language arts program out there. It is my favorite subject again and my kids love it too. </div>

Twizzler is using PACES this year. We have clearly veered off of the Charlotte Mason path in this subject. I taught science and nature studies for YEARS using CM's methods but it was not working for us any more. A friend of mine talked me into giving ACE a try and the kids LOVE it. </div>

Skittles is taking an online science class through <a href="https://www.flvs.net/">Florida Virtual School</a>. This is our first venture into the public school world. Although he would prefer to be using PACES, we are giving this a try. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I thought we were going to be done this week. We have finished up a lot of stuff but we have some more to go. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Language Lessons</u>- Usually I do a 32 week school year but our curriculum is 180 lessons. So we still have a month left. However after this week, I will let the kids do as many lesson per day as they want to get the book finished early. Skittles and Twizzler are copying poems this week. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Math</u>- Skittles finished Teaching Textbooks 5 on Tuesday. Now he is just practicing his math facts using fun apps on his tablet each day; <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spinfall.math&hl=en">Medieval Math Battle</a> is his favorite. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Writing</u>- Twizzler is still working on cursive letter formation. This week he worked on letters I-L. Skittles wrote about the Trojan War and drew a picture of the Trojan horse. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>History</u>- We have been reading about the Roman Empire in Story of the World. This week we learned about the persecution of the Christians and then the first Christian Emperor. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Spelling</u>- Twizzler studied words ending in the letter -y. Skittles completed his final week in Learn to Spell Through Copywork book C. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Science</u>- Skittles is having a ball finishing up his PACE about Flight. Twizzler is still learning about different habitats. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Reading</u>- Twizzler finished Revolutionary War on Wednesday. He is just gobbling up these Magic Treehouse books. Skittles is about half way through Treasure Island. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><br /></u>
We had our co-op promotion night tonight. I can't believe that Skittles is going to be a middle schooler and Hershey is a preschooler. I am very proud of Twizzler who has come such a long way in his reading this year.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEf_qELDMXX8VYHmmArGjtz1eIi-v9hR8FEwMfv2nOya98o-h2OkI5KUqTsMpMgG645rT31pXKV31pNGDxHfdYzlrwwtf2d-9KWJwP68VLFapceNf-oICcceEMZAyZDgAKobE8KL5vYC8K/s1600/wrap+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEf_qELDMXX8VYHmmArGjtz1eIi-v9hR8FEwMfv2nOya98o-h2OkI5KUqTsMpMgG645rT31pXKV31pNGDxHfdYzlrwwtf2d-9KWJwP68VLFapceNf-oICcceEMZAyZDgAKobE8KL5vYC8K/s320/wrap+up.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I FINALLY have a new computer. I decided not to get another laptop. I have gone through 3 laptops in the past 6 years but my 11 year-old PC is still running like a champ. Unfortunately it is so outdated that I can't run anything new on it. I kept the dinosaur for the kids to do their school work on but I have a new computer for myself. So I can BLOG again!!! YAY!!<br />
<br />
So not much has changed since I blogged last. We are wrapping up our school year. Skittles and Twizzler are almost done with their curriculum.<br />
<br />
Both boys have a few more weeks of Language Lessons. Twizzler is copying a cowboy poem. Skittles is working on some review.<br />
<br />
Twizzler has a few more weeks of math but Skittles will be done next week. I stopped a few times with Twizzler this year and last year to work on math facts.<br />
<br />
Skittles is writing and drawing about the Exodus from Egypt. Twizzler has finished his Pics in Cursive books for this year. For now he is just working on letter formation using a cursive writing pad I got from the Dollar Tree.<br />
<br />
In history this week we read about the birth and death of Christ. We already studied this at Christmas and Easter at church since we were doing the Story. So we did not spend too much time on it.<br />
<br />
Twizzler really struggled with his spelling words last week so this week we have just been reviewing the same words. Skittles is almost done with his spelling book too.<br />
<br />
In science, Twizzler is learning about habitats and how the earth changed after the flood. Skittles is learning about flight. He has been so excited to start this PACE. He wants to be a pilot one day.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtp1/v/t1.0-9/10155135_826268117458836_8145734761215519425_n.jpg?oh=22d2df08ca5dcc7ff650dbe517423a8b&oe=55FDFB46" width="320" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Skittles is reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Treasure-Island-Robert-Louis-Stevenson-ebook/dp/B00VUPHIB8/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1432090772&sr=1-8&keywords=treasure+island">Treasure Island</a> for literature. He wasn't sure that he would want to read it because it is such a thick book but I told him that this is the original pirate story. It is an adventure to read and once he starts, he won't want to put it down. I am working on his written narrations. I am trying to draw out more info from him. Twizzler is reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Tree-House-Revolutionary-Wednesday/dp/0679890688">Revolutionary War on Wednesday</a>. He just recently began to read Magic Treehouse books on his own. I love seeing both of my kids curled up reading chapter books. </div>

<br />
Spring is such a tough time of year for us. I have no idea why but Skittles goes through a phase every year around this time where he starts grumbling and completely fighting me each day on school work. I call it spring fever. Last year I was actually looking into private schools, I was so done.<br />
<br />
This week was very hard. Skittles and Twizzler are fighting. Twizzler and Hershey are fighting. Skittles and I are fighting. Everyone has been miserable. I am posting this Weekly Wrap-Up so late because we did not finish our school week until bedtime Sunday night.<br />
<br />
<u>Language Lessons-</u> Twizzlers copied a poem, Little Things by Julia Carney. Skittles has been reviewing adjectives and adverbs.<br />
<br />
<u>Math-</u> Skittles has been working a lot with fractions and mixed numbers. Twizzler has been learning geometry.<br />
<br />
<u>Writing-</u> Twizzler's picture study was,<a href="http://www.artnet.com/WebServices/images/ll00128lldR8GGFgE4qCfDrCWQFHPKcR2z/harry-brooker-children-playing-at-horse-and-cart.jpg"> Playing at Horse and Cart by Harry Brooker</a>. Skittles copied a page about ancient Egypt and drew some Egyptian images from his Draw and Write Through History book.<br />
<br />
<u>History-</u> We read about ancient China. We read about their writing and learned about Confucius. They also read about the Great Wall of China.<br />
<br />
<u>Spelling-</u> Twizzler's spelling words all had 'ie' in them. I had him write out when the 'ie' made a long e sound and which words it made a short e sound. Skittles words were a piece of cake for him.<br />
<br />
<u>Science-</u> Skittles finished up a unit on bees. He has been giving us little facts about bees for the last 2 weeks. Twizzler is in the middle of a unit on outer space. He learned about the moon and sun. He learned how the moon effects the earth's tides. He also learned about telescopes.<br />
<br />
<u>Reading-</u> Skittles started reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Shiloh-Quartet-Phyllis-Reynolds-Naylor/dp/0689835825">Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor</a>. He is enjoying an easy read after reading <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Robin-Hood-Howard-Pyle-ebook/dp/B0084BZS9K/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1430269594&sr=1-4&keywords=Robin+Hood">Robin Hood</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Hobbit-J-R-R-Tolkien-ebook/dp/B0079KT81G/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1430269643&sr=1-1&keywords=The+Hobbit">The Hobbit</a>. Twizzler read some tall tales about Paul Bunyan. Then he made a diorama of Paul in a forest in his book club.<br />
<br />
<u>Bible</u>- Both boys finished their Awana books this year!!! I am so proud of them.<br />
<br />
I have been so busy fighting with Skittles and Twizzler to do their school work that I have not done anything with Hershey. He wants to do school work so badly though. He does color daily. He even carries around a little notebook and pen. He tells me that he is doing his school as he scribbles away with a very serious look on his face.HH365http://www.blogger.com/profile/04316489538581444294noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2752301202206348765.post-59944454643132462652015-04-03T20:21:00.000-07:002015-04-03T20:33:20.812-07:00Weekly Wrap-Up Flying<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEf_qELDMXX8VYHmmArGjtz1eIi-v9hR8FEwMfv2nOya98o-h2OkI5KUqTsMpMgG645rT31pXKV31pNGDxHfdYzlrwwtf2d-9KWJwP68VLFapceNf-oICcceEMZAyZDgAKobE8KL5vYC8K/s1600/wrap+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEf_qELDMXX8VYHmmArGjtz1eIi-v9hR8FEwMfv2nOya98o-h2OkI5KUqTsMpMgG645rT31pXKV31pNGDxHfdYzlrwwtf2d-9KWJwP68VLFapceNf-oICcceEMZAyZDgAKobE8KL5vYC8K/s1600/wrap+up.jpg" height="254" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Skittles has been dreaming of being a pilot since he was in Kindergarten. I could write a book on his obsession but I won't. If you know him, you know that he only has 2 loves in this whole world, Minecraft and aviation. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am afraid of flying. The thought of my baby in an airplane is scary to me. It does not scare him though. I am confident that this is a desire that God has put in his heart. I know that God can use Skittles to do mighty things for Him up in the air and around the world. I have been praying for God to open doors for him to realize this dream. Recently I learned about a program called <a href="http://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/">Civil Air Patrol.</a> We went to a meeting on Monday night and it was surreal for me. My baby, <a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/search/label/My%20Miracle">my tiny little miracle</a>, my little boy, walked into a room full of soldiers.... umm, I mean airmen, and he fit right in... HE FIT RIGHT IN! I knew this was where God was putting him. This is where he belongs. sigh. Pass me the <strike>Xanex</strike> Kleenex. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I should not be surprised. Military is in this boy's blood. His father, grandfather, 3 great grandfathers, 1 uncle and 3 great uncles all served in a branch of the military. 1 grandmother, 1 great grandmother, and at least 1 great aunt were or are flight attendants. Oh and one uncle is a skydiver! Flying is in this kid's DNA. Scary for me, exciting for him. But God has not given me a spirit of fear. 3 years ago I would have told him that flying was completely out of the question but my relationship with the Lord has grown. Now I know that whatever happens is God's will, not mine. The best thing for me to do is make sure Skittles knows who Jesus is and to pray for him. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>Language</u>- Twizzler is working on parts of sentences. He began the week focusing on verbs and nouns and ended the week studying the subject and predicate. Skittles learned about lyric poems. Then he had to choose a subject to write about and write his own lyric poem. Can you guess which topic he chose?</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
Planes</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I got into my plane</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I taxied down the lane</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I took off with a loud hum</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We flew away having lots of fun </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>Math-</u> Skittles has been working on different units of measurement all week. Twizzler has been learning about angles. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>History</u>- We have been reading about life in ancient Rome. We read about the life of a gladiator. Then we read about the Punic Wars. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u>Science</u>- Twizzler finished his unit on the five senses yesterday. He learned about the sense of touch, skin, and blood this week. Skittles wrapped up his unit on outer space. Lucky for us the moon has been especially beautiful and bold so we went out and observed it with our telescopes. </div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</blockquote>
<br />
<u>Literature</u>- Skittles is zooming through The Hobbit and loving it. Twizzler read some fairy tales this week, Rumpelstiltskin and Rapunzel.<br />
<br />
<u>Preschool</u>- Hershey and I have been learning about <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/HHomeschool365/easter/">Easter </a>this week. We colored in a picture of a <a href="http://www.dltk-holidays.com/t.asp?b=m&t=http://www.dltk-holidays.com/easter/posters/bposter-bunny.gif">bunny and traced the letters Bb</a>. He colored <a href="http://www.dltk-holidays.com/t.asp?b=m&t=http://www.dltk-holidays.com/easter/posters/bposter-egg.gif">an egg and traced the letters Ee</a>. We counted Easter Eggs. We also hid and found them. We filled them with rice and danced to the music they made. We read the Tale of Peter Cottontail. We talked about gardens, rabbits, and obeying Mommy.<br />

<a href="https://www.rheumatology.org/Practice/Clinical/Patients/Diseases_And_Conditions/Fibromyalgia/"><img src="http://i1.cpcache.com/product_zoom/794827408/fibromyalgia_awareness_necklace.jpg?height=250&width=250&padToSquare=true" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last week I had the kids school work ready to go on Sunday night. I was determined that we were going to work right through Spring break. When I woke up Monday morning, I looked at my schedule for the week and changed my mind. I am so glad I did too. I think I would have ended up in the hospital if I had tried to push school through. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This week was our church's annual Easter party. I worked harder, longer hours this week than I have since I started the job. I loved every second of it but I have <a href="https://www.rheumatology.org/Practice/Clinical/Patients/Diseases_And_Conditions/Fibromyalgia/">fibromyalgia</a> and it has taken a toll on me. I have been gobbling down ibuprofen for 4 days. I can barely walk. Even my finger tips hurt. It hurts to type this. Isn't that ridiculous? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was diagnosed with Fibro back in 2009 after a year of testing and a bunch of different doctors. I was relieved to find out that all of my symptoms did not mean I was dying. Typically they put fibro patients on antidepressants but those made me depressed. Or they use an anti-seizure medication but I cannot take that as I also am epileptic. So they tried to prescribe me pain meds. I have no desire to become addicted to drugs and I absolutely cannot be loopy while trying to raise three children. I keep hoping and praying they will find a cure. In the mean time I just do my best to keep the pain manageable. I have done a pretty good job of that until this week. I know I over did it and even after I had overdone it, I kept going. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The saying, "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger," Is not true with fibro. While fibro will not kill me, I can only push so far before I hit a wall. And boy have I hit the wall. I hit it harder this week than I have in many years. Every inch of me is hurting, aching, throbbing. Today is the kind of day that I wish I had filled my rheumatologist's prescription for pain meds. Instead I will just spend my day in bed. I am so thankful for Netflix and take-out. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't tell everyone that I have fibro. I feel like they will not believe that my pain is real. I worry that they will judge me some how for it. I don't want people to think that I am weak. The fact is that I can't be weak. I am a single mom. I can get things done when they need to be. I just have a hefty price to pay after the fact. This weekend I ran around, pounding stakes in the ground and wrapping caution tape around them. I carried big metal garbage cans full of Easter eggs. I dumped those eggs all over 2 fields and spread them out. As I type this I think, "Before I had fibro I would read this and laughed. haha, Big deal!" I know it doesn't sound like much and I loved every second of it, I just wish I did not hurt so bad after. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Saturday night I actually dreamed that I was walking and my legs were falling off my body, sliding right out of my hips and falling off. Sometimes I feel like my spine might just slip right out of my back. I read the description of <a href="https://www.rheumatology.org/Practice/Clinical/Patients/Diseases_And_Conditions/Fibromyalgia/">fibro on websites </a>and it describes the pain as "tender to the touch." HA! That makes it sound so manageable. Just don't touch me right? But right now my body is touching the chair I am sitting on. My fingers are touching these keys when I type. My feet are touching the floor. My back is not touching ANYTHING but it still hurts! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am not asking anyone to donate money to fibromyalgia research. There are people dying all over the world from various illnesses. There are a million causes more worthy of financial support than fibro. I just want to raise awareness. I want you to know the pain is real. I want you to know that just because a person does not look sick, does not mean they are not hurting. And just because someone has fibro, it does not mean that they don't WANT to work hard. Go donate your money to cancer research and just be understanding that fibro is real and the pain is REAL. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The weather has been in the 80s here this week. So we got to work in my favorite classroom. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It is amazing what a great motivator a sparkling pool is. Our pool over-looks a small river and is covered with shady oak trees. It is so peaceful and we need peace this time of year. For the past 3 years right around this time, Skittles starts to try and boycott school work. He starts to throw little temper tantrums and complain that he is bored. The first year I was ready to sell him to the gypsies. Last year I was ready to enroll him in school. This year I have made peace with it and accepted it for what it is, a phase he goes through each year. I think the cause is a combination of beautiful weather and being so close to the end of our curriculum. We only have 7 more weeks of school. Until then, I am going to use the sunshine to my advantage. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><u>Language Lessons - </u></b>One thing no one ever complains about is <a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/2015/03/language-arts.html">our language arts program</a>. Skittles has been learning about combining sentences and avoiding run-on sentences in Language Lessons. Twizzler has been practicing nouns, pronouns, and verbs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Twizzler's spelling words were all 'ow' words. This week I had them define a few of the words on Monday when they copied them down. Then they worked on their sentences the rest of the week with a better understanding of the words' meanings. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Skittles wanted to learn how to draw so I got him '<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Through-History-Creation-through-Volume/dp/0977859703">Draw and Write Through History</a> Creation Through Jonah.' It is a nice history recap. This is the first time writing cursive on plain lined paper. This first week has been a struggle.</div>
<ul style="text-align: justify;"></ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Twizzler's picture study this week was of '<a href="https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B-WSLMzIAAAXigA.jpg">Admiring the Picture' by Johan Georg Meyer Von Bremen</a>. We are also working on the direction that he writes his letters. I showed him which direction they should be going. Then I showed him the directions that his letters are going now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><u><br /></u></b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><u>Math- </u></b>The boys are back in their Teaching Textbooks lessons. Twizzler is whipping right through his math problems now that he has his math facts memorized. I will be adding the rest of my <a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/2015/03/copywork-for-math.html">math facts </a>worksheets to this blog soon. I had them all done and saved to my laptop right before the laptop died. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><u>History-</u></b> We read about the founding of Rome. We read about their gods, the way their government worked, and they way they built their empire. Skittles is already familiar with the Greek gods so he had no problem connecting them to their Roman counterparts. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u style="font-weight: bold;">Science- </u> Twizzler is still learning about the 5 senses. This week he learned about skin and the sense of touch. Skittles is still learning about space. He made some constellations. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2PnNS_AjhzcZ4BhK0WQcTOPeK_BtANihTJLLL7M24cEX4skqwsLLK1JlHdo-M3tBGOto9dIidq2ZL7WkYRbdtK_sojgDmoxqmBPU5f1dxS7zTO5yRL3svnVxdevpx_e3bjSczj9IRBidV/s1600/10314710_799899966762318_8880778514708086202_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2PnNS_AjhzcZ4BhK0WQcTOPeK_BtANihTJLLL7M24cEX4skqwsLLK1JlHdo-M3tBGOto9dIidq2ZL7WkYRbdtK_sojgDmoxqmBPU5f1dxS7zTO5yRL3svnVxdevpx_e3bjSczj9IRBidV/s1600/10314710_799899966762318_8880778514708086202_n.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<b><u>Reading- </u> </b>Twizzler read a couple more of Aesop's fables this week. He finished them up very fast and then skipped ahead to next week's story in his book. Skittles is enjoying reading the Hobbit. He complained that yesterday's chapter was 16 pages long but he was happy to see that today's chapter was only 6 pages long.<br />
<br />
<div>
<b><u>Bible- </u> </b>Both boys have hit a stall in their Awana work. Skittles finished his book but he can work on his silver and Gold awards. Twizzler still has one chapter left to finish. He just stopped because Skittles stopped I guess. So we are going to be working on Awana this weekend. </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u style="font-weight: bold;">PE-</u> I am having a hard time making the break dance lessons fit into our schedule. So, this week the boys were able to go back to Parkour classes. They really had fun and came back covered in sweat. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><u>Music-</u> </b>The boys are still in choir. This week they are singing. Skittles has his very first solo performance. I can't wait.<br />
<br />
<u style="font-weight: bold;">Home Ec-</u> Skittles helped me cook a big breakfast today. Because of his help I was able to sit down with everyone and eat while my food was still hot. Usually I would still be in the kitchen flipping pancakes when the sausage and eggs were served along with the first round of pancakes. I doubled the amount of pancakes than I usually make and stored the rest for breakfast tomorrow. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">Sunday, after church, the boys went to Trail Life. Skittles learned about ancestry and mapped out what he knew of his family tree. Twizzler learned about maps, globes, and GPS. They toured the world using Google Earth. We looked for the Nazca lines but could not find them. ??? I thought they could only be seen from the sky. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">This week Hershey learned about </span><a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/2015/03/st-patricks-day.html" style="text-align: start;">St. Patrick's day, rainbows, and money.</a> He also mastered pooping on the potty! I have been rewarding him with a sticker each time he makes it to the potty. We don't put them on a chart. He would much rather put it on himself.<br />

It was kind of the beginning of the idea for this blog. My focus was to point out my blessing for the week. Now that I have brought back my <a href="http://methodmom.blogspot.com/search/label/Show%20and%20Tell">Weekly Wrap-Ups</a>, I thought I should bring back my Thankful Thursday posts too. So here we go.... <div>

I really have a love for the English language as an art so I am very selective when it comes to my children's language arts curriculum. I have looked into many programs and even tried a few. Most English lessons out there are based on repetition which quite honestly is boring even for a person who LOVES English. English can not be learned by rote. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last year we tried Rod and Staff English. It was thorough. You can't finish that book without knowing the structure of the English language inside in out. You can't finish that book without falling asleep or wanting to beat your head against a wall. You can't finish that book without HATING English. Actually you just can't finish that book. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The problem with teaching English by rote is that it is necessary to understand the reasoning behind language structure because quite honestly the rules don't always apply. There are just too many rules anyway. I don't even know all the rules. How can I expect children to? The best way to learn a language is through immersion. We know that is true with the spoken language. It is true with the written language as well. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Mason">Charlotte Mason</a> homeschooler. Charlotte's philosophy on homeschooling came from years of experience educating children in a classroom and at home. She came up with a system for teaching language arts to children without using rote instruction. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/search/label/Literature">Literature</a>- Exposure to great literary works rather than text books and "twaddle." Even preschool age children should be exposed to nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and fables not just beginning reader type of books. Many of the reasoning behind the structure of the English language can be gleaned from reading well-written pieces of literature. </li>
<li><a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/search/label/Narration">Narration</a>- The retelling of a story in the child's own words instead of filling out worksheets with fill-in-the-blank questions. Children can start giving oral narrations in preschool. Once they are able to write fairly well, they can start writing their narrations down. </li>
<li><a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/search/label/Copywork">Copywork</a>- Copying well-written literature for handwriting practice also teaches grammar, spelling, structure and character. </li>
<li><a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/search/label/Dictation">Dictation</a>- Writing down a phrase, sentence, paragraph, and eventually a full paper as it is read using proper spelling and grammar. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This time last year I had already thrown out our Rod and Staff English book and pulled out my copy of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Simply-Grammar-An-Illustrated-Primer/dp/1889209015">Simply Grammar</a> instead. It was so refreshing. It was so easy that I wondered if it could really be teaching them everything they needed to know. The only problem with Simply Grammar is that it is too short. It needs to be supplemented to even make it a full year much less through several years of education. Many Charlotte Mason homeschoolers use copywork alone as their daily grammar. Copywork is wonderful but I feel they need more instruction on writing; outlining, editing, creating a research paper, etc., if I want them to be successful in college. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then I found<a href="https://www.queenshomeschooling.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=60_61"> Queen Homeschool Supply's Language Lessons.</a> These lessons are like an expanded form of Simply Grammar. They incorporate all of the key elements of Charlotte Mason language instruction and also teach the things that children need to know to be successful in college. Each book builds on itself. In fact they are not listed by grade level but rather by skill level. This way you know where to begin for each child. There are 180 lessons in each book, a full year's worth. We do one lesson per day. They are short and sweet. My kids LOVE them. I love them too. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are coming to the end of our school year. Soon the tax return will be coming in and I will be ready to order next year's curriculum. It is time to evaluate what has worked and what has not worked for us this year. Without a doubt we will be keeping our Language Lessons. In fact I think they are already in my cart waiting to be purchased. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

In public school, children are making leprechaun traps and wearing green to celebrate St. Patrick's day. In Boston and Chicago they have big parades and dye the nearest body of water green. I grew up in an Irish town. I marched in the St. Patty's Day parade every year when I was in school. I never knew the real meaning of the holiday though. I never knew who St. Patrick was. I was told he was, "the patron saint of Ireland," but being raised baptist I had no idea what a patron saint was. I thought maybe he was an Irish king. Where I grew up people didn't say, "Happy St. Patty's day." They said, "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erin_go_bragh">Erin go bragh</a>," Ireland forever. Like, "Viva la france." Was he Ireland's Napoleon??</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It wasn't until I was an adult that I looked into what St. Patrick's day is really all about and <a href="http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=89">who St. Patrick was. </a>Patrick was not Irish!!! His name wasn't even Patrick! It was Maewyn Succot. He was the child of Roman citizens living in Kilpatrick, Scotland. When he was a teenager he was captured by PIRATES and taken to Ireland. There he lived as a slave among the pagan Irish people. He escaped when he was 20 and became a priest. Then God convicted him to return to the land that had once enslaved him and to preach the gospel. He witnessed to an entire nation and brought them to Jesus. Legend has it that he used a shamrock to teach the trinity, using the three leaves to represent the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What a legacy! What a story! How has his life NOT been made into a movie yet??? Hollywood wishes they could write a story like that. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I want to teach people the true meaning of St. Patricks' day. This week I taught my preschoolers at co-op about St. Patrick. Here is what we did.... </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wanted to read them, <a href="https://www.google.com/shopping/product/4345175780309163737?q=the+story+of+St.+Patrick%27s+Day&es_sm=93&psj=1&biw=1280&bih=909&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.&bvm=bv.88198703,d.cWc&tch=1&ech=1&psi=-JkHVf4UsduwBMaEgKgP.1426562293356.3&prds=paur:ClkAsKraX8XC9LWEG3DAkey1PM83GVhHXyKsvyc44UZwybCe24ldiOcq_83sg-G03zQaBK4HUKe0kmcmdWaeLDYhyP2OGh9fGFKumvbFJx6x0t6k8LAD5UOVKBIZAFPVH73lOW1HQNHizajF0rjXHz59Z2OeFg&ei=_pkHVbm8BovHsQTJ0YKgAQ&ved=0CNQBEKYrMAQ">The Story of St. Patrick's Day by Patricia A. Pingry</a> but I can't seem to find my copy. I am going to have to buy it again I suppose. We watched a Veggie Tales video instead. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/fg5ejLGEnZk/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fg5ejLGEnZk?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we traced and colored a <a href="http://www.coloring.ws/t.asp?b=m&t=http://www.kidzone.ws/prek_wrksht/pre-print/pre-print-shamrock.gif">shamrock </a>and discussed the trinity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I found a lot of patterns and sizes worksheets for math but they all had leprechauns or something silly on them. One of the legends I always heard growing up was that if you follow a rainbow to the end, you will find to a pot of gold. So I wanted to talk a little about money. Not surprisingly, I could not find many preschool activities involving money so I made up my own using ideas from Pinterest of course. Feel free to print off your own copy. I might even make one for the other coins if there is an interest. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3Ja6THTiP8YcWxEakM2Y1BvMDg/view?usp=sharing"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCpH13tzzi-KMZpiRbFn0mOGAUXvSDMUTQLNqPX1dAjWG4sJ12pDyY_M0LEE_lhdZJI9Qcw1Vbg8yeKEap7eyHjLZ4DrXyBtWREaWdExf6YtGeQ7aEBl_J3kvOWCru8LwHdEKIv-yyimyf/s1600/pennies.bmp" height="320" width="205" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This lesson teaches the value of a penny and one-to-one correspondence. Also this is just more fun than a boring old worksheet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUn0Kzwzhyphenhyphen8yYUiZfIU7EdIdsVnnCWp-iU5STuXN9edSUsQMPqQFXf0tglrSoeypj_DhfRF86tFB2znAnNZsIPJ_cOjDFEIR5SSPNKUIzUBDSFSZuRSJ6FNX4MFtvGQalj8iR9u7pxEgKL/s1600/11066509_10152646169556513_7582242399285579691_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUn0Kzwzhyphenhyphen8yYUiZfIU7EdIdsVnnCWp-iU5STuXN9edSUsQMPqQFXf0tglrSoeypj_DhfRF86tFB2znAnNZsIPJ_cOjDFEIR5SSPNKUIzUBDSFSZuRSJ6FNX4MFtvGQalj8iR9u7pxEgKL/s1600/11066509_10152646169556513_7582242399285579691_n.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Next we watched a video about how rainbows are formed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/EqUp-bsglO4/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/EqUp-bsglO4?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Then we tried a few experiments to see if we could make a rainbow of our own. First we tried to use the jewels on my necklace as a prism. It created a neat disco ball effect but no rainbows. Then we tried shining a computer disk in the sunlight. WOW!!! What a rainbow! It was beautiful! The kids had so much fun taking turns manipulating the rainbow that they did not want to try the final experiment. If I had known the CD trick was going to work so well, I would have saved it for last. Our final experiment was the mirror in water with a <a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/2015/02/making-rainbow.html">flashlight trick</a> that I did with Twizzler a couple of weeks ago. It just couldn't compare to the CD rainbow. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBO-IV96EkNMVT0085FJGmPHTP4VRJCs91O4IpYUTMEpaWY4alsfv9gjc7X-DUaoO98q0BBVU7Z2x2Z24nXlXcA4LGobYeNS95Yo2a6FPFLTmjm4SSBLa4pUDnVgTBLL33dhW4HeKZJ5c4/s1600/11064777_797943953624586_4903524946899109767_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBO-IV96EkNMVT0085FJGmPHTP4VRJCs91O4IpYUTMEpaWY4alsfv9gjc7X-DUaoO98q0BBVU7Z2x2Z24nXlXcA4LGobYeNS95Yo2a6FPFLTmjm4SSBLa4pUDnVgTBLL33dhW4HeKZJ5c4/s1600/11064777_797943953624586_4903524946899109767_n.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
For our music lesson, we listened to some <a href="http://www.pandora.com/station/play/2558128426389986909">Celtic music</a> and tried dancing to it. Then we watched a video of some Irish step dancers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/ow_aiSYwNv4/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ow_aiSYwNv4?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We took lessons and tried it out ourselves. It was a lot of fun. We laughed at ourselves. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://ytimg.googleusercontent.com/vi/EfsMuAZO_wQ/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/EfsMuAZO_wQ?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Finally for our craft, I found a <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/387450374168166499/">cute art project on Pinterest</a> and added the bible verse, "Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven" -Matthew 6:20. They did not turn out <i>quite </i>like the picture but the lesson was learned and that is all that matters. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP8PcM7DpFC4K6Q0j4nc5qFJ4r3kTEzgWAne_CtdHBhzWUlUVPS46cE9CrII_NLJxr2TF2ADn61ubXgFHa6SImtCZa8NIfBUd12ueT15PJvkqV6ns6V3kLbVHGYY-UZBxN4A2x5LExE6OW/s1600/10300445_10152646211631513_7200010336555292680_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP8PcM7DpFC4K6Q0j4nc5qFJ4r3kTEzgWAne_CtdHBhzWUlUVPS46cE9CrII_NLJxr2TF2ADn61ubXgFHa6SImtCZa8NIfBUd12ueT15PJvkqV6ns6V3kLbVHGYY-UZBxN4A2x5LExE6OW/s1600/10300445_10152646211631513_7200010336555292680_n.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think it is important for Christians to celebrate St. Patrick's day, not by dying things green and drinking Guinness. Be a witness. Tell someone about Jesus. Remember the boy who was kidnapped and enslaved but went back years later and told his captures about God's love and sacrifice so that they could go to heaven. No wonder all of Ireland celebrates his name. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Language Arts</u> - Twizzler is still working on understanding nouns. He is copying a poem to help him remember types of nouns. Skittles has been copying a poem all week. He has been using his very best handwriting. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Math</u>- We are still practicing our multiplication facts. We spent the whole week working on our 4 facts. Today they did a Teaching Textbooks lesson. Twizzler Aced his. I have to grade Skittles still. He had to do it all on paper because the laptop is in the shop. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Pictures in Cursive</u>- Skittles studied <a href="https://iamachild.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/family-favourites-never-mind.jpg?w=500">Family Favourites by Arthur John Welsely</a>. Twizzler studied <a href="http://uploads2.wikiart.org/images/jean-leon-gerome/bashi-bazouk-and-his-dog.jpg">Bashi Bazouk and His Dog by Jean-Leon Gerome</a>. They both are doing wonderful with their writing. I just have to remind Skittles to cross his t's and dot his i's from time to time. Occasionally I have to send Twizzler back to write a letter more carefully but all in all I am impressed with their writing. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>History</u>- We learned about the Americas this week. We read how people migrated over the great land bridge into North America and eventually down into South America. We read about the <a href="http://www.aztec-history.com/olmec-civilization.html">Olmec heads</a>. We read about <a href="http://www.peru-machu-picchu.com/">Machu Picchu</a>. They drew a <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=Machu+Picchu&es_sm=93&biw=1280&bih=909&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=xrIDVeW-OciaNtbSgIgI&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ">picture </a>of Machu Picchu in their history journals. We learned about the <a href="http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2010/03/nasca/hall-text">Nazca lines.</a> Then we tried to make our own drawings while blindfolded. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/10290649_795752290510419_5885778672747482075_n.jpg?oh=e29297ddb8094c2d19acfd8cd36738d8&oe=557F29D6&__gda__=1438097632_644c477833bd0c683715e150e1108be2" width="320" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Spelling</u>- Twizzler's words all had 'ow' in them this week. At the end of the week he was able to spell every single one correctly. Skittles words were much more hard. I admit that they are words that even I have had to double check to be sure I spelled them right. Still, at the end of the week, he was only able to spell 3 of his 8 words correctly. So I sent him off to copy them 3 times each. We will try again tomorrow. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Science</u>- Skittles has been studying space for the last 2 weeks. He has learned about each of the planets and their order from the sun. Twizzler has been studying the 5 senses. He learned about sight, smell, and hearing so far. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u>Literature</u>- Twizzler has been reading Aesop's Fables. This week he read, 'The Grasshopper and the Ants' and 'Belling the Cat." He also read, 'The man who couldn't read' for his realistic fiction selection in book club. Skittles began reading the Hobbit. He absolutely is loving it. After his oral narration of the chapter, I have him write down one sentence focusing on the main idea of the chapter. So far his narrations are as follows... </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Dwarves come to Bilbo's house to make him a thief. </li>
<li>Bilbo and the dwarves are attacked by orcs. </li>
<li>The camp rests in a mountain. </li>
<li>The dwarves are attacked by trolls. </li>
<li>Bilbo plays riddles with Gollum. </li>
</ol>
<div>
I also had him write a riddle of his own today. </div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
What turns green when the ice caps melt yet has no life? -Mars</blockquote>
Apparently he learned the above fact from his space study. <br />
<br />
<u>Bible</u>- Twizzler only has one chapter left in his Awana book. Skittles FINISHED his book Wednesday. Now he is working on getting his silver and gold awards.<br />
<br />
I linked up with...<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<ul>
<li>In Language Lessons, Twizzler finished copying his poem from last week and started to learn about nouns. Skittles studied a painting and then wrote a story about it. </li>
</ul>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
He was a shepherd in the field. One day the king came to him and said, "God told me to send you to Greece." So he set off. The first night he was very happy but the next night a bear ripped up his tent. Now he was tired and cold. The next night he gets there so he takes a nap. He was carrying bibles to Greece.</blockquote>
<br />
<ul>
<li>The boys worked more on their multiplication facts on the <a href="http://365daysofhappyhomeschooling.blogspot.com/2015/03/copywork-for-math.html">worksheets I made</a> for them. </li>
<li>Skittles picture study this week was "<a href="http://prints.encore-editions.com/0/500/edward-john-cobbett-an-attentive-friend-approximate-original-size-20x24.jpg">An Attentive Friend" by John Edward Cobbett.</a> I have started having him write his copywork onto regular lined paper to get used to not having the extra lines. Twizzler's picture study was<a href="http://www.1st-art.com/120272-thickbox_default/plums-aka-les-prunes-by-william-bouguereau-reproduction.jpg"> "Les Prunes" by William Bouguereau.</a> I taught him that "les prunes" is French for plums. </li>
<li>In history we read about Alexander the Great. I had Skittles write me a brief narration each day about what we read. I had Twizzler fill out a worksheet I made. There is one spot for a sentence and a picture for each day of the week. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3Ja6THTiP8YeUdDazY5Sks5Nms/view?usp=sharing"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbSK6rAcm7fBzAvXsLQesM4pD8AtS6xohIwGFS6f2r82UjwV1JYs1lR9QxQoU0epqCPVKPM9AjR7Ig6SZg21KxF9hPsRHQVeYmkoGEWjRkXvSlEGstabuFuEjaOCCwizXGSF5rY2ZBnkfT/s1600/Historygrade+2-3.bmp" height="320" width="199" /></a></div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Twizzlers spelling words were all practicing the 'ou' sound. Skittles words showed the many ways to make the 'or' soundat the end of a word; aur, ure, er, and or. </div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Skittles finished reading the books, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Greek-Legends-Stories-M-Seton-Williams/dp/0948695226">Greek Legends and Stories by M.V. Seton-Williams</a>. Twizzler read the story of <a href="http://www.wendyrasmussen.com/13/the-three-wishes-retold-by-melissa-blackwell-burke-mcgraw-hill/">The Three Wishes</a>. </div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Skittles is learning about Space this month. This week he drew a scaled version of the solar system on a roll of paper. He measured out the distances of each planet from the sun. Twizzler's new science book arrived today. He is learning about his 5 senses this month. This week he focused on sight. </div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hershey practiced cutting with his scissors a lot. Thankfully, thus far, he has only used them appropriately to cut paper.</div>
</li>

I realized recently that the boys were taking longer and longer to do their math lessons. I would catch them adding up multiplication problems using their fingers, toes, and noses. Yes, I said noses. Their scrap papers that they worked out their problems on where full of tally marks. Many times they got a problem wrong because they were off by one digit. They had simply miscounted. It is time for them to memorize their multiplication facts. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I remember trying so hard to do this as a child. I did flash cards all the time but I am not a visual learner. I am a kinesthetic learner. That does not mean that I have to act out the lesson or bounce on a ball. I am a note taker. There is something about writing it down that just writes it into my memory. Typing it out does not work. I have to write it with my hands and then it is permanently engraved on my brain. Some days I write out my grocery list and forget it at home but as long as it was hand written, I can remember what was on the list. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is why copywork is so awesome. Copywork does not have to be for language lessons alone. Copywork is a great way for children to memorize their math facts. I created worksheets for my kids to copy and memorize their math facts. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My worksheets give the student 3 tools for recalling their multiplication facts. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>repetition- They are copying the facts over and over for the first 2 days. </li>
<li>skip counting - If they can remember how to skip count to 12 in each number, they don't have to add up. </li>
<li>commutative property- They see that numbers can be multiplied in either order. So if they forget what 4x3 is but they remember 3x4, they know their answer. </li>
</ol>
<div>
These worksheets are NOT a full math curriculum. They are for when you need to take a pause in your math lessons and focus on the facts so that you can go forward more easily. Teaching Textbooks does a great job teaching the multiplication facts. And there are many games and apps out there too that practice the math facts. But if your child is a kinesthetic learner like I am, you might want to try some copywork. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are the worksheets that I made for my boys. Feel free to download and print them yourself. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I am no longer blogging each day, but I am going to try to blog weekly at least. So.... this week....<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Skittles and Twizzler have been practicing their multiplication facts. Queen Homeschool has this amazing book, <a href="https://www.queenshomeschooling.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=399">Math Facts for Copywork</a>. Sadly, it was not in my budget this school year. However, I love the idea. So I wrote out the multiplication facts for 3 and 4. On the first day I had them copy the facts and the skip counting. The second day they had to answer all of the problems and then copy them again. When they were done I asked them to skip count for me. I then asked them the problems in random order. If they were not able to give me the answer right away, I marked an X by it and had them copy it again. By the end of the week, they had their 3 and 4 facts memorized. On Friday, they did their Teaching Textbooks lessons and I showed them how to use the multiplication facts they had memorized to solve division problems. </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/q83/p480x480/11021250_10152612994136513_220126328971959403_n.jpg?oh=6ca566b59c809619a2c4f1a7bac838b6&oe=55837B2E&__gda__=1434539489_762175c33a73d98001c6466afdf68f0d" style="text-align: justify;" /></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Twizzler copied a poem, The Cow by Robert Louis Stevenson this week. I was very picky about letter formation. He has a hard time remembering to start his tall letters high enough. His t's look like plus signs. His l's look like i's without the dot on top. So I had him draw a row of lines from blue line to blue line on notebook paper. When he was done I had him turn the lines into the tall letters of the alphabet. Then I had him copy the whole alphabet utilizing the full space between the lines. It proved one thing to me. He is capable of forming the letters correctly. Maybe I just need to resign myself to the fact that he is going to have messy handwriting and that is okay. Maybe he will be a <a href="http://www.doctorsecrets.com/secrets-in-medicine/doctor-bad-handwriting/why-doctors-write-so-bad.html">doctor</a>. 'wink wink'</li>
</ul>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
Skittles learned about synonyms and antonyms this week. I love how simply the lessons are presented. He truly understood the two and was able to explain it to me. </blockquote>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">We learned more about Sparta and Athens this week in history. We read about when King Xerxes sent messengers into Sparta and told them to give a simple offering of water and dirt. The Spartan's responded by throwing them into a well. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkWS9PiXekE">We watched that scene from the 300 </a>and I have regretted it ever since. Now they are shouting out, "THIS IS SPARTA!" Every time they hear "This is..." .......Okay I still laugh.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Both boys totally ACED their spelling this week. </li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Science was a bit of a mess. Monday Twizzler was recovering from a stomach bug. He was not able to do the reading on his own. I tried to help him with the drawing but he was getting more and more frustrated. Tuesday he could not figure out how to copy a map. By Wednesday, he and I were both in tears and I realized that this is just not working for him. We need to find something that works for him. So I pulled out some science pages that I got from the <a href="http://www.dollartree.com/office-school/learning-educational/workbooks/Teaching-Tree-Assorted-Reproducible-Worksheets-38-ct-Packs/610c616c619p321308/index.pro?method=search">Dollar Tree</a> last summer. Each page has a story and step by step instructions on how to draw the subject of the story. Then he has to write about what he learned. How very Charlotte Mason... Thursday he read about turtles. Friday he read about flowers. He said he likes this kind of drawing. </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-mia.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/11019588_10152613054701513_8466331427608621231_n.jpg?oh=a89f517a5b4e99eb933b19f5a6efc6e5&oe=557841DB" style="text-align: justify;" width="320" /></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
Skittles is trying something new for science that he really likes. He has been learning about the ocean for the last 2 weeks. He has been talking about diatoms, diving bells, and continental slopes. I am so glad that he is really interested in what he is learning. I hope it continues to hold his interest. This kid eats up science. </blockquote>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Twizzler finished his reading book this week. Today he read me a story about Abraham Lincoln and his son Tad. </li>
</ul>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">
Skittles has been reading Greek Legends. The book has pictures of Greek statues in it. He brought me a picture of a statue of a female goddess this week and said, "This is very inappropriate mom." I told him that I was proud of him for averting his eyes and he could cover it up with a post it note if he wanted to.</blockquote>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">The kids did not have Awana this week but that did not stop them from working in their books. Twizzler especially. He has done one section per day. Both of them have almost finished their books.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">At co-op the preschoolers and I read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and then did a bunch of fun <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/HHomeschool365/mouse-cookie/">activities </a>to go with it. Skittles and Twizzler talked all the way home about their gross science experiments, Then they serenaded me with a Spanish song all afternoon. I am so grateful to be a part of a co-op so they can learn those types of things... God knows I wouldn't want to teach them Spanish or how to make slime. </li>
</ul>

</div>
<ul>
<li>I found an <a href="http://physicscentral.com/experiment/physicsathome/rainbow.cfm">experiment </a>for how to make a rainbow. We all crowded into the dark bathroom and shined a flashlight onto a mirror in a pan of water and caught a tiny rainbow on our piece of paper.</li>
</ul>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">The kids read about Athens today in Story of the World. It is very different from the soldier's life in Sparta. </li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">I read Green Eggs and Ham to my preschoolers at co-op. I was very impressed with how Hershey matched up his <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/387450374168166478/">shapes </a>to the right eggs completely on his own. Then we made a Cat in the Hat. We added the bible verse, "Taste and see that the Lord is good."</li>

<ul>
<li>sleeping in until 10 am after a long night of being up with a sick little boy.... or just because you can. </li>
<li>breakfast in bed because you don't have to rush off anywhere. </li>
<li>being able to take school on the road to run errands. </li>
<li>getting to do stuff for others during the day. Today we swept and mopped the rehearsal room for our dance ministry at church. Every one pitched in to help, even Hershey. He held the dust pan and "swept" with the little broom. <img height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10987621_10152595227716513_2522603558236893675_n.jpg?oh=ded95c78b0e9136f625224622c858021&oe=558F3FBB&__gda__=1434716100_afc8080e187b909c4c70f024f848ce39" width="320" /> </li>
</ul>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The room is used all afternoon. Homeschooling allowed us to work around the schedule of the dancers. </blockquote>
<ul>
<li>being able to take the first available doctor appointment and not worry about it interfering with school. </li>
<li>streaming videos of <a href="http://www.kidzone.ws/science/rainbow.htm">science experiments</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Yli-yvNy-k">lessons</a> instead of just reading it in a book. </li>
<li>The very best benefit is getting to learn about God in all subjects. Science is HIS design. History is HIS story. Language is HIS creation. </li>
</ul>
</div>

Today I split up the kids. Skittles and Hershey went with Nana and Gpa while Twizzler went to work with me. Twizzler got most of his schoolwork done in the car and brought the rest in to work on while I worked on this week's lesson plans. </div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>I am having the boys spend some time working on math facts this week. Skittles is working on each number times itself for example, 2x2, 5x5, 7x7, etc. Twizzler is working on his 3 times table. Very simply, I wrote down the complete math facts with answers. I had them copy them yesterday. Today they answered them and copied them again. Tomorrow they have to answer them without looking at the answers. Any that they get wrong they will copy again correctly, the same way we do spelling words. </li>
<li>Twizzler learned about what makes a rainbow. I found some great resources on<a href="http://www.lessonpathways.com/Pathways/Detail?path=%2f02_Science%2fYear_3_-_Exploring_Our_World_-_Science_For_Early_Elementary%2f24Light_and_Color"> Lesson Pathways. </a> Today we watched the<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQukmSPctks"> video about how rainbows are formed</a>. Then he drew a rainbow using colored pencils.</li>
</ul>

Today was our first day back from our Valentine's week break. We don't normally take a week off for Valentine's day but we were ready for a break and we had a lot of stuff going on last week so we skipped school. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>I think it is safe to say that Hershey is potty trained. He has not had an accident in several days. Today he actually wore real underwear all day long, even when we were out and about. </li>
<li>Skittles did a cool science experiment to learn about water pressure. He took a gallon jug and nailed 4 holes in it. Then he covered the holes with tape and filled the jug with water. Then he removed the tape and saw the force with which the water drained from each of the holes. It was a very cool experiment. I did not have to do a thing. He completely handled it on his own. I just wish he had placed the jug in the bath tub instead of on the counter top. </li>
<li>The boys had a slightly extended break dance class today. They are going to be performing this weekend. I can't wait to see it. Twizzler has been battling stage fright over the last few years. This is the first stage performance that I have seen him REALLY excited for. He is really proud of his dancing skills. </li>
<li>We are learning about Persia this week. It lined up perfectly with our lesson at church where we are learning about Queen Esther. We watched <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430431/">One Night With the King</a> yesterday. If you haven't seen that movie yet, check it out. </li>
</ul>

When I started this blog, my focus was on <i>my </i>family, <i>our </i>homeschool experience. I was so stressed out at the end of each day. I wanted to start focusing on the good things to help put the negative things into perspective. This blog helped me to do just that. In the beginning, I was still stressed all day long. However, at the end of the day when I started typing out the good things, those light bulb moments, the times when I knew they were learning something big or little, it made me smile. I would go to bed refreshed and ready for the next day. Eventually, I started noticing those positive moments while they were happening. I would think to myself, "That is something for the blog." </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then there were days when almost nothing good happened. I think everyone can relate to those days. I wanted to stay positive though so I would focus on something like, "We survived math today." "No one died during our language lesson." Of course I couldn't write that per se, so I wrote, "Twizzler learned how to write words in alphabetical order." It was a small victory but a victory nonetheless. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then there is the whole <i>keeping it equal </i>thing. Sometimes one child has a very bad day and another has a really good day. I didn't want it to look like I was playing favorites. I did not want someone reading to think that one child was smarter than the others. I ended up making very boring statements like, "Skittles learned long division today and Twizzler learned about even and odd numbers." When in reality Skittles spent an hour, in tears at the computer with me walking him through each problem step by step and still got an 86% but Twizzler picked up his new concept on the first try and got a 100%. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I realize that my blog has become boring. I mean, even I am bored reading it and it is about MY kids. I am bored writing it. It is becoming a chore. I am no longer focusing on the positive things that happened. I am just telling you what was on my lesson plans. You guys don't want to read my lesson plans. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have been thinking about why I even started this blog in the first place. I want to focus on the WINS of the day. I want to be an encouragement to other homeschool families. I want to be a resource for families who are just starting out or thinking about homeschooling. I want to have discussions with my readers. I want feedback. I want to hear YOUR wins for the day. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I have decided to make a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/happyhomeschool365">Facebook page</a>. I will be able to post on there daily. This means I will probably only blog once or twice per week. On FB I can post a quick word of encouragement, share links, post pictures, and most importantly communicate with my readers. I want to take a step back from blogging where I am the writer and you are the reader and instead build a community of encouragement. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
