This week we did all of our school from What Your First Grader Should Know.
Our Bible verse this week is Proverbs 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.
In Math we studied time. I was worried about it but my 1st caught on really quickly. I used the lesson from the book and some board clocks I got from the dollar bins at Target. These little clocks are great. They have movable hands and a spot to write the time either digitally or in word form with dry erase. He had a lot of fun playing with that clock. It was a wonderful purchase. We also did some worksheets to help reinforce the idea. We are going to be working on time for the next few weeks.
In Literature we read some folktales and fairy tales. We read The Frog Prince, The Boy and the Dike, Brer Rabbit Gets Brer Foxes Dinner, and Jack and The Beanstalk. Our Poem was The Swing by Robert Louis Stevenson who we are studying all year.
In Grammar we worked on what makes a sentence. We discussed the beginning letter is ALWAYS capitalized and it must end in a punctuation mark. We are still working on it. LOL. He knows the rule but does not always remember it in his writing.
Writing was covered with some copy work in his story starters. He finished all of his penmanship with the alphabet last week and has moved onto only copy work. I write down his dictation and he copies it onto the paper.
In Science we learned about animal habitats. There are a few chapters in the book that we read from and then we discussed them throughout the week.
History was a lot of fun. We have been studying the Maya and this week we learned a little bit about the Inca as well.
We took a Field Trip to the local Museum of Art and Science. They have a lot of artwork from the Napoleonic era right now that I found fascinating. As we walked through the exhibits I pointed out how to find the name of the piece, the name of the artist, the year and place it was made, and the medium used. Each time we entered a new room I would tell Skittles to pick out a piece and tell me about it. By the end of our trip he was able to do this easily and without prompting!
On the museum property there is a nature preserve. So, we took a Nature Walk. It was so beautiful and serene. There were so many things to see and study. The kids picked out the gum ball off of a Sweetgum Tree. It is a neat little specimen. We have not entered it into our journal yet. I am sure we will get around to that though.
an excuse a confession to make here... I was so overwhelmed this week with party planning, Dr's appointments, field trips and meetings that I did not do any school with Twizzler. And we didn't do any computer school at all... Oh well. There is always next week.
